What Is Acupuncture?

If you’ve landed on this page, perhaps you’ve tried western treatments and medications without success, or you’re interested in learning more about natural, holistic medicines. Acupuncture is a form of Traditional Chinese Medicine that involves stimulating points on the body, often by penetrating the skin with a needle as fine as a strand of hair, to alleviate pain and treat a variety of ailments. It has been practiced for over 2,000 years, and numerous studies suggest that acupuncture can help alleviate chronic pain, including back, neck and joint pain. For some people it can also help reduce the frequency of tension headaches, prevent migraine headaches, reduce hot flashes during menopause, address addictive behaviors and mitigate symptoms often associated with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression and anxiety. Theoretically, acupuncture can treat any ailment. The World Health Organization approves the treatment of acupuncture for hundreds of different conditions.

The theory of acupuncture is based on Qi (pronounced chee), the vital force or energy that flows throughout the human body, much like the circulatory systems and myofascial tissue. Qi, and other descriptive words unique to this field of medicine, are metaphorical descriptions of different aspects of complex physiological systems and processes. Unlike western medicine, Chinese medicine doesn’t necessarily treat biomedical termed diseases. Rather, it addresses patterns of physiological dysfunction and disharmony of systems. Through this model, Chinese medicine treats the symptoms of your disease and the root cause.

Disruptions in Qi can be caused by many factors, such as poor nutrition or improper diet, organ malfunction, infection, mental/emotional distress, etc. However, the body is simply amazing and innately knows what it needs to heal and recover. When you come down with an illness, the body is alerting you of a malfunction. When the body presents symptoms and patterns, it is explaining what areas need to be addressed in order to regain function.

Our licensed acupuncturist is trained to listen to the messages your body is presenting and restore harmony to your systems. By stimulating parts of the body, it’s possible for acupuncture to restore overall functioning to your mind and body.

Acupuncture Can Bring Balance To Your System

Because each patient’s health issues are uniquely experienced, acupuncture treatment is tailored to each client’s specialized needs. During your initial appointment, we will ask about the problems you’re experiencing, as well as your entire health history. Through a variety of personalized assessment tools, we will be able to recommend a proper treatment plan to address your particular condition.

When we begin acupuncture treatment, you will lie comfortably on the soft table while your acupuncturist stimulates the various acupuncture points to produce desired effects. Most people feel minimal or zero discomfort as we gently place the fine needles. During and after treatment, people tend to report feeling very relaxed.

Chinese medicine views the body as one emotional, physical and spiritual whole, and acupuncture improves the body’s functions while promoting its natural self-healing processes.

By acutely addressing and healing areas of imbalance, you can restore overall balance to your entire being. As we work together, we will tailor the wisdom of Chinese medicine to fit your unique system. For example, we may prescribe herbs as well as correct lifestyle choices that are impacting your health, down to the foods you eat. The types of grain and meat you consume can be specialized to what your body needs. We have helped numerous individuals heal from a variety of imbalances, including gastrological issues, pain conditions, edemas, post-op recovery, parasites, addictions and more.

Acupuncture is viable alternative to western medicine, but can also be complementary to western medicine practices. Whatever condition you may be suffering from, we will work collaboratively with other health providers to help you improve self-awareness, make better self-care choices and find natural remedies that promote good overall health.

The human body knows what it needs to get better, so acupuncture simply uses the body’s physiological functions to heal itself. Our board-certified NCCAOM acupuncturist and herbalist is trained to listen to the language of your body and help you achieve the relief, growth and healing you want and need. It is possible to restore your system back to harmony.
